Day 1: Brisbane to Dalby | 2hr 30 minutes

Hit the road early and head west toward the open skies of the Western Downs. The drive is longer – but that’s the point. It gives you space to slow down, unwind, and ease into the pace of the country. Stop in Toowoomba for breakfast at Ground Up Espresso, a laneway favourite known for its expertly brewed flat whites, flaky pastries, and hidden courtyard charm. Prefer to stretch your legs a little later? Oakey makes a great pitstop too.

Roll into Dalby by early afternoon and check into your stay –  whether it’s a cosy motel, self-contained cabin, or a grassy camp spot, Dalby makes the perfect base to explore the region. If you’re visiting between April and October, time your arrival for a Wednesday morning tour of the Dalby Saleyards. As one of the busiest cattle markets in the country, it offers a unique, boots-on-the-ground insight into real country life. For more things to do in Dalby, guide out this guide.

Come evening, head to The Australian Hotel for a laid-back pub dinner and a local beer. Expect country classics done right – crumbed steak, stacked burgers, and weekly specials that hit the spot after a day on the road. The kind of meal that leaves you full, happy, and already feeling like you’ve arrived.

Day 2: Dalby to Miles | 1 hour

Start your day with breakfast at Urban Paddock Café in Dalby. Tucked behind a classic weatherboard cottage, this light-filled café serves up great coffee, house-made cakes, and a laidback garden setting perfect for families or travellers easing into their day.

Before leaving town, swing by a local produce store or weekend market (if the timing’s right) and grab a few country-made goodies – ideal for a snack on the road or a picnic lunch later in the day.

Then it’s time to head west (yes, even more west). Your first stop? Chinchilla – a friendly country town best known for its juicy claim to fame: the Big Melon. Snap a photo with the famously oversized fruit, then wander the main street for local eats, handmade sweets, and maybe even a melon-themed souvenir or two. Pop into the Visitor Information Centre to learn more about the region’s proud melon-growing heritage.

From there, continue on to Miles, where you’ll step straight into the past at the Miles Historical Village Museum. This immersive, open-air museum brings pioneer-era Queensland to life with more than 30 lovingly recreated buildings – including a post office, bakery, bank, and schoolhouse – all filled with original artefacts. It’s one of the best-preserved snapshots of life in the early days of Western Downs.

Finish the day by settling into your accommodation in Miles – whether it’s a country motel, a nearby camp spot, or a quiet stay under the stars. You’ve earned a slow evening and a sunset stroll.

Day 3: Miles to the Bunya Mountains

Leave the plains behind and wind your way into the Bunya Mountains – a lush, elevated haven where the air is crisp, the forest is deep, and ancient bunya pines tower overhead. Wallabies graze beside the road, and the change in pace (and altitude) is instant.

Spend the day as slow or adventurous as you like. Hike one of the many trails that weave through the national park  – from short rainforest loops to waterfalls and lookouts that open to wide, breathtaking views. Or keep things relaxed with a coffee on the deck of a local café while king parrots and crimson rosellas wander right past your feet.

If you’ve got the time, stay the night in one of the region’s eco-cabins or cottages. Many come with fireplaces, wide verandahs, and views that go on forever – perfect for sipping something local as the mist rolls in and the fire crackles to life.

This is the kind of day that reminds you why we holiday like this – close to nature, full of fresh air, and far from everything else. For everything you need to know about the Bunya Mountains, check out this guide.

Day 4: The Long Way Home

Ease into your final morning with a slow breakfast on the deck, the forest still and quiet around you. Take one last wander beneath the bunya pines or simply sit and soak in the cool, clean air – it’s the kind of start that makes the journey home feel less like an ending and more like a gentle return.

If you’re travelling between May and October, check out the Western Downs event calendar before you leave – there’s a good chance a festival, market or local celebration is just around the corner, and well worth extending your stay for.

From open paddocks and historic pubs to forest trails and oversized fruit, the Western Downs is the kind of place that lets you truly switch off. No rush, no pressure – just time together, space to breathe, and that slow, soul-filling sense of holidaying like this.
